HARTLEPOOL United manager Colin Cooper has praised the “energy and enthusiasm” of his side after they secured their first win of the season on home soil.

Goals from Charlie Wyke, in the 5th minute and Brad Walker, in the 79th, sealed the 2-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town at Victoria Park in Sky Bet League Two.

Cooper said: “It was positive from the off, with energy and enthusiasm.

“Shrewsbury are solid and organised and I think from the chance we had first minute, we felt good.

“Lots of things we wanted were energy and enthusiasm and we saw lots of that.

“The difference from previous matches is that we get our noses in front.

“But I saw some exciting stuff, lots of opportunities and lots of crosses while we defended our box well.

“I can only be pleased and if we send our fans home happy we are all happy.”

Meanwhile, Pools are assessing the hamstring injuries to right-backs Michael Duckworth and Stuart Parnaby.

Duckworth got injured in training on Friday and was replaced in the team by Parnaby, who had himself only just returned from a hamstring injury.

But after just 39 minutes he had to go off after tweaking the other hamstring.

Speaking afterwards, Cooper added: “Michael tweaked a hamstring in training on Friday.

“He was having a scan Sunday morning, so we will know the extent.

“It was in some technical relay races and he felt it as he tried to hit a ball 20 yards.

“Stuart was feeling good and strong, started well and felt a hamstring. Another blow and the opposite one to previous.

“We are looking at next weekend, it’s a stretch already for that.”
