FREE agent Jonathan Greening is back training with Hartlepool United and manager Colin Cooper hasn’t rule out making a move for him.
The midfielder, 35, was on trial at Pools in pre-season after an unsuccessful period training with Rotherham and played against former club Middlesbrough in a friendly match.
But he left Victoria Park almost as quickly as he had arrived, and it appeared he was set to sign for Championship side Blackpool.
That move didn’t transpire, though, and the experienced central midfielder is now back training with Pools at their Maiden Castle base.
Pools boss Cooper said he invited Greening in to keep up his fitness levels.
Central midfield isn’t a priority, reinforcements are needed further up the pitch but Cooper didn’t rule out completely a deal for Greening.
Cooper said: “Jonathan has come in training.
“When he came in pre-season he was offered one or two bits but they haven’t quite happened.
“I have offered him the chance to come and train because as a footballer at this stage of the season, the last thing you need is to be sat on your backside.
“As a bloke he is great, he comes in and is really enthusiastic about his job.
“He still had his kit from last time he was here so I said why don’t you bring it in and come and have some training!
“It is as simple as that. He is in to keep ticking over.
“If anything happens here great, if not, he is a footballer that wants to train.”
We first revealed at the start of July that Cooper was tracking the former Premier League midfielder.
Since being released by Nottingham Forest at the end of last season, Greening has previously also spent time on trial at Championship side Rotherham United but failed to win a contract.
