DEFENSIVE stalwart Christian Burgess says he would “love” to stay at Hartlepool United for the rest of the season – but admits the situation is out of his hands.
Burgess joined the Clarence Road club in the summer from neighbours Middlesbrough in a deal up until Christmas.
But the Essex-born central defender said he would love to see that extended until next summer because he is enjoying his time at the Sky Bet League Two side so much.
The 22-year-old has also urged other players coming up through the academy ranks at clubs to look to go out on loan in order to give their career a boost.
Burgess, when asked whether he’d like to stay all season, said: “I think it is probably out of my hands at the moment.
“I haven’t spoke to Boro and I suppose we will see how it goes and then we will have to see what they say and what the gaffer here says and then decide what is best for both parties.
“I would love to stay and it has been fantastic so far.
“I would like to see out the season, but it is out of my hands at the moment.”
His current spell at Pools, which has seen him pull on the blue and white shirt 23 times, is his first loan move as a professional footballer and he has encouraged others in his situation to follow suit.
Burgess began his career in Arsenal’s Academy but was released and then featured for Bishop’s Stortford’s youth and reserve teams but then fell out of the professional game.
After trials at West Ham United, Spurs and Boro he was given the chance to revive his career and signed for the Teessiders.
Burgess, who made his debut in the opening day game against Rochdale, added: “This is my first loan move and it is the best thing for any young player coming up through the academy.
“There is only so far academy football can take you before you need to start getting experience.
“And the physical side of things is very different.
“You will be tested a lot more physically and I think everybody needs to understand what it takes to make it through all the different leagues, in the likes of League One and League Two.
“It is great experience for young lads if they can.”
