JOHN Hughes has one simple instruction for his players which he ranks above all others – smile.
The 48-year-old Hartlepool United boss is adamant that the only way his new side will escape the League One relegation zone is by enjoying their work.
Hughes is grateful for every day he spends in football, admitting that the game is his lifeblood and he wants his squad to share that appreciation.
“We are doing a job we love, being paid to be involved in football – enjoy it,” Hughes said.
“If I’m seeing someone walking around without a smile, then smile.
“You need to appreciate your job.
“First up let’s make sure we are smiling and there’s a positive energy about the club, a trust, a bond and a positive spirit.
“I want the boys to get out of bed in the morning and look forward to coming in here.”
Hughes, though, maintains his win-at-all-costs and hard-work ethics.
“You’ve got to enjoy it, but there has to be that determination to win as well,” he said.
