COLIN Cooper hopes Jordan Richards will learn from his red card – but admits the young defender has blown his big Hartlepool United chance.
Richards was sent off just two minutes into Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Fleetwood for a crude tackle on Town’s Jeff Hughes.
The 20-year-old had only just come into the starting XI following an injury to Michael Duckworth, who has had surgery on a double hernia.
Richards has now been suspended for three matches, starting with Saturday’s League Two ‘derby’ against York City at Victoria Park.
It leaves Pools minus their two first-choice right-backs following Cooper’s early-season decision to move the one-time regular number two Neil Austin across to the left.
And it also leaves Richards time to contemplate his rash challenge.
“It’s a tough lesson for Jordan but one he’ll hopefully learn from,” Cooper said. “He’s blown his opportunity.
“Whatever way we decide to go, it now presents an opportunity for someone else. “We have options and will see where we go with it.”
