HARTLEPOOL United could re-sign former favourite Dimitrios Konstantopoulos.

It is understood the Greek goalkeeper – who played for Pools between 2003 and 2007 – has already held talks with the club and is being lined up as replacement for Scott Flinders.

Player of the Year Flinders has attracted interest from several suitors in recent weeks and it is thought Bristol City are at the head of the queue for his signature.

Pools have long since known that the 26-year-old is likely to move on in the summer and have made plans to bring in a new No.1.

That looks set to be 35-year-old Konstantopoulos and he could become the club’s first signing of the close-season.

The 35-year-old is out of contract at AEK Athens and would arrive on a free transfer at Victoria Park.

His signing would certainly prove a popular choice among supporters.

Signed by Neale Cooper in 2003 from Portuguese side SC Farense, the 6ft 5ins stopper went on to make 139 appearances for the club.

Perhaps his most memorable display came during the 2005 play-off semi-final at Tranmere Rovers.

Konstantopoulos pulled off a string of top-drawer saves to take the tie to a penalty-shootout where Ritchie Humphreys struck the winning kick to set up the play-off final against Sheffield Wednesday.
