THE annual Sunderland Clarion hill climb brought out a strong North East field to Lady Park in Gateshead, and for the second season in a row the course record was broken as Karl Denton of Blumilk.com took the title.
Karl’s time of 3 minutes 46.8 seconds over the tough one-mile climb was 12 seconds quicker than that of second place Ian Taylor (Adept Precision RT), who narrowly beat Thomas Timothy (Velo 29 OTR Vankru) by half a second with his time of 3:58.9.
The club’s Peter Foster Memorial Trophy for the fastest Sunderland Clarion rider went to Michael Sloanes, who capped off a strong season with a personal best on the climb of 4:17.6, a time that put him well ahead of last year’s winner Matt France, who finished 17 seconds slower than Sloanes.
Meanwhile, Craster Bryce of Sunderland Clarion took the best veteran’s prize with a time of 5:04.6.
To break from tradition, a second event was held two hours later on Hammer Square Bank leading up to Beamish, which again saw a strong field take on the shorter and steeper climb.
The change in gradient, however, didn’t affect the outcome as Denton took the victory again, and in doing so established the course record on the inaugural climb of 1:52.8.
Behind him, the podium was completed by the G.S Metro pair of Ben Lane and Carl Donaldson, with Timothy and Taylor finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
