DURHAM coach Geoff Cook has identified the Dynamos’ upcoming away games against the Northamptonshire Steelbacks and the Derbyshire Falcons as ideal matches to kick-start their T20 campaign.

The Dynamos have yet to win a T20 fixture this year following a five-wicket defeat to the Warwickshire Bears and the abandonment of their fixture against Worcestershire Royals without a ball being bowled.

But, ahead of two games on successive nights – at Northampton tomorrow (5.30pm) and Derby on Friday (7pm) – Cook believes if his team play with the same confidence they showed in their opening game, and from their table-topping County Championship form, they will be able to get back to winning ways.

He said: “I wouldn’t say it was absolutely crucial, but it would be lovely to pick a win or two at the end of this week.

“We were disappointed we went all the way to Worcester and did not have the opportunity to win the game there.

Against Warwickshire in the first game we played ok without doing the ruthless things to win the game, but there were some promising signs there.”

The coach admitted the timing of the T20 matches could not have a come at a worse time for the team as they were hitting the peak of their form in the four-day format after defeating Lancashire to leapfrog them into pole position.

He said: “I think we were a little bit unlucky going into the Warwickshire game as it was on the back of the satisfaction and the excitement of winning that crucial game against Lancashire and we had to literally play the next day which is tough.”

Cook is wary of the threat of this week’s opposition, in particular the Steelbacks, who have lost just once this season in all competitions.

He added: “They’ve had a very good start to the season. They have a very experienced team. They’ve made a couple of good investments that have benefited them this season.”
