THE Warmseal Durham Senior League could be set for a big expansion with a second division – but not without controversy.
The reaction from other leagues, who would be directly affected if a second division came about, has been one of shock.
League secretary Ray Matthews said: “Our member clubs became distinctly uneasy following the relegation of Marsden into the Durham County League last season.
“I don’t think there would have been an issue if they had gone into the Durham Coast League, as this would have made geographic sense.”
But Durham County League chairman John Irvine said: “I’m absolutely appalled by it all. I think the DSL are just trying to look after themselves, but the potential outcome is that several leagues could be severely depleted, leaving them unviable.”
