HOUGHTON Cycling Club promoted the first ever Cycle Races on the former Nissan car testing track on Sunday.

There was a large entry of riders spanning ages eight to veteran.

Two events were run for the under 16s, plus a 30-minute bunch race for 4th category and novices, with the main event a 90-minute bunch race for 3rd and 4th categories.

Fortunately there was no rain on the day, but the wind made for hard racing as the riders struggled into a strong headwind on the finishing staight.

The main event was won by Jonathan Caisley of Northumbria Police CC in a bunch sprint with the most heroic ride coming from Carl Donaldson of Breeze Bikes, who held off the bunch for most of the race to take four of the five lap sprints.

The club will now talk with Gateshead College, who run the track, to evaluate the event, with the possibility of promoting further events next year.
