Olympic hopeful Kat Driscoll says winning the British Gymnast of the Year award has given her a massive boost ahead of a frenetic schedule of competitions leading into London 2012, writes Graeme Anderson.

The West Rainton trampolinist was named the outstanding athlete of the year by British Gymnastics at an awards ceremony at the weekend and told the Echo: “I was over the moon to have won that award.

“I’ve had a great 18 months and it’s just great to know that trampoline and myself are being recognised for our achievements!

“Us trampolinists have always been in the background in the gymnastics world because gymnast Beth Tweddle has been phenomenal on the world stage for a number of years and the only way we could change that was to go and do the same!

“So we have been working really hard to try and prove we are world contenders too.

“I think I am the first trampolinist to win the award but I don’t expect to be the last – we have got such a strong group of women in Great Britain and hopefully we will continue and carry on from where we are now.”

The 26-year-old is now off with her team-mates to take part in World Cup competitions in Spain and Switzerland ahead of the British National Championships and admits her timetable is so busy at the moment that she has barely had time to dwell on the world’s biggest athletics event.

“It’s all going a bit crazy at the moment,” she laughed. “And I can’t actually believe there is less than 50 days to go!

“Time is just speeding by so fast, but that’s what I expected and I’m sure it will be the opening ceremony before we all know it.

“I’ve got lots of things on though that will keep me busy and the events in Spain and Switzerland and then the British National Championships are my main focus at the moment.”

Official confirmation of who will be Great Britain’s Olympic representative won’t be made until early July.

But Driscoll is a racing certainty for selection after the year she has had, coupled with her most recent performances in competition.

She said: “It’s a busy but exciting time and I’m just looking forward to trying to do my best at the moment in everything that’s coming up.”
