Boxing: Hughes pulls out of Olubamiwo clash

Danny 'Boy' Hughes has pulled out of his heavyweight clash against Larry Olubamiwo next month.

The giant 23-year-old was due for an intriguing showdown against the Londoner in Sky Sports' fight night at the Seaburn Centre next month.

But a back injury has affected his pre-fight preparations and trainer Tommy Conroy has taken the decision not to risk his boxer's unbeaten record.

Conroy said: "Danny's very disappointed and was thinking right up to the last minute that he might have a chance. If I'd let him, I'm sure he would have been happy to get in the ring – he's that sort of lad.

"But I've got to do what's best for his future and the simple fact is that it would have been unfair of me to let him keep pushing himself with a back problem."

Olubamiwo fought in the North East in May – on the Tony Jeffries bill at the Crowtree Leisure Centre – and although he lost that fight, he showed what a potentially dangerous opponent he might be.

Conroy said: "I think that Danny has the beating of Olubamiwo and I think the fight would have been a good one for Danny at this stage of his career as he looks to step things up.

"But I also think he will need to be at his best to go in there and do the job and I couldn't in all conscience send him in when he was struggling physically.

"I don't think the injury is anything serious. Missing out on the fight next month is a real disappointment but hopefully it won't be too long before he's back in the ring again."
