KIRK Goodings is the lightweight champion of England.

The Sunderland star gained a unanimous points victory over Middlesbrough’s Paul Truscott at Houghton.

There was no lack of commitment from Truscott but the greater class came from Goodings in a 10-round war at the Rainton Meadows Arena.

Goodings was sharp from the first bell and reeled off the first three rounds.

Truscott had the better of round four with some good bodywork

But thereafter Goodings regained the initiative and while some rounds were close, there was no question about the overall winner.

Judges Mark Curry and Phil Edwards scored it 99-91 with Andrew Wright marking it 99-92
