BOXING promoter Phil Jeffries has put back the date of his latest fight night at the Rainton Meadows Arena in the wake of Sunderland reaching the Capital One Cup final.
A packed bill of boxing, due to be topped by Sunderlands’ Kirk Goodings defending his English lightweight title against Fishburn’s Gary Fox was set to take place on Saturday, March 1.
But that has now been put back to Friday, March 7 after Sunderland’s stirring victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
Jeffries explained: “With Sunderland at Wembley for the cup final on Sunday, March 2, it wasn’t right to hold the title fight and the other bouts the night before.
“Most boxing fans are football fans and the simple fact is that the vast majority of supporters who would want to go to the boxing would be in London that weekend.
“It has cost a bit of money to switch it from the Saturday to the following Friday but I think it’s only fair on the boxers and the public that we do that.
“And anyway, I can’t complain too much - I’m a mad-keen Sunderland fan and if I have to re-schedule, there could be no better reason than Sunderland reaching a Wembley final!
“The new date, March 7, will give everyone a chance to watch a great night’s boxing after going down to London to watch Sunderland lift the trophy!
“I’m really looking forward to this next show, Kirk Goodings against Gary Fox is going to be a belter, a proper North East derby fight and the rest of the card is stacked with talent.
“It’s going to be a great couple of weeks of sporting entertainment.”
As well as the title fight between Goodings and Fox, Sunderland’s Jonson McClumpha and Jordan King will also have bouts, as will Easington’s Paul Archer and West Rainton’s Tommy Ward.
Gateshead’s Rob Ismay, Hartlepool’s Michael Hadfield and Peter Cope and Northumberland’s Lewis Scott will also be boxing, with further fights due to be confirmed in the next weeks.
Tickets already issued for the original date remain valid, while anyone who wants to go to the March 7 event should contact either the boxers personally, or Phil Jeffries on 07747 611 020.
