SIX young Wearside fighters hope to continue their progress towards national titles.
They’ve all made it into the semi-finals of the Amateur Boxing Association Junior Championships.
Sunderland Amateur Boxing Club send their two young internationals Jake Slater (CLass 5, 60k) and Isaac McLeod (Class 4, 63k) to the showdown at Ryhill, near Wakefield, on May 7.
The club sent three into the quarter-finals in Manchester, with national champion Slater starting fast against A Anders (Egans).
Anders took to spoiling and was repeatedly cautioned for holding, but Slater was still able to get in the cleaner shots and won 12-7.
Double national champion McLeod had too much for C Holland (Egans), forcing a first-round standing eight count with a crunching right to the jaw and a left hook to the body.
The bell rescued Holland, but a another count in the second round prompted an automatic stoppage for McLeod, who faces Charlie Lee (Kettering) in the semis.
Sunderland’s James Conlon (66k) boxed well and just fell short 17-15 in his quarter final.
Washington twins Pat and Luke McCormack are once again blazing a trail for Birtley ABC.
Luke (Class 4, 48k) must overcome Harry Bray (Shepshed) for a place in the final while Pat (50k) takes on Clark Titterton (Hillsborough).
Houghton & District ABC’s Josh Kelly has a contest with Karl Simpson (Hillsborough) in the Class 5 57k semi-final while Hylton Castle’s Ryan Conley battles against Dexter Thomas (West Leeds) in Class 4 75k).
