SUNDERLAND ABC have two representatives in this years Junior ABA finals after Isaac McLeod and Jake Slater both triumphed on points at Havercroft Sports Centre in West Yorkshire on Saturday, writes Andy Whittle.
First up was McLeod in the 63kg Class 4 semi-final (for boxers born in 1995) and he was forced to work hard before edging out tough Charlie Lee of Kettering School of Boxing, 21-16 over three two minute rounds.
The man from Northamptonshire looked the bigger of the two and he was more than happy to stand and trade when the occasion called for such measures but it was McLeod’s better accuracy coupled with a slightly busier workrate which proved the difference.
Slater, meanwhile, in the 60kg Class 4 semi (boxers born 1994) found a somewhat less challenging route to the final, defeating Billy Pickins of Sharkys ABC in Leeds by a wide 26-6 margin.
Having signalled his intent with a precise right uppercut in the opening moments Jake never looked back and the Yorkshireman was reduced to having to search, in vain for the most part, for a big right hook.
Pickins did get through with a couple of scoring blows, most of what he threw was taken on the gloves or arms of Slater who, varying his work nicely, was seldom troubled.
Hylton Castle’s Ryan Conley slipped at the semi-final stage, going down 18-2 to Dexter Thomas of West Leeds ABC in the 75kg Class 5 clash.
