DANNY “Boy” Hughes went down to defeat against much-hyped teenager Hughie Fury on Saturday night.
The Sunderland heavyweight was rarely troubled by the rising star’s punches at the Ponds Forge Arena in Sheffield but was very disappointing in his own attacks.
Nineteen-year-old Fury had disposed of eight of his previous 13 opponents by way of knockout. But he found it impossible to tag Hughes, who produced a spoiling display to smother and frustrate his opponent.
Fury looked out of sorts himself in a poor spectacle for the audience.
Hughes, 28, admitted going into the contest that ideally his fitness and sharpness would have been better.
In the end, Fury earned a comfortable points victory, winning seven of the eight rounds. But it was arguably his least impressive performance to date.
