SUNDERLAND ABC boxer Joel Hassan will fight for a national junior ABA title in Birmingham tomorrow.
The 15-year-old St Aidan’s schoolboy has been Tyne and Wear champion for the past four years and has also reached the quarter-final stage of the junior ABAs four years in succession.
But this is the first time he has progressed to the semi-finals, having beaten dangerous North West champion Ross Balmer (Sefton) to do so.
The pair met at Liverpool’s Croxteth Sports Centre and Hassan did well to use his superior boxing skills to beat the hard-hitting Balmer to a convincing points decision.
Now he meets local Birmingham fighter Ben Vaughan (Kings Heath) at the Great Barr Leisure Centre.
Lambton Street’s Ben Grassam came close to joining Hassan in the semi-finals after a great contest with Jack Harrison (Gemini).
Both boxers went toe-to-toe and Grassam looked the sharpest and seemed to do much of the work but lost on a split decision.
Birtley ABC’s Dickinson brothers, Jack and Mark, won their contests and have semi-finals tomorrow – against Louis Colclough (Stoke Staffs) and Billy Scott (Retford) respectively.
