THE Inter County Schools’ Cross Country at Kirby Stephen on Saturday will be used to finalise the Durham team for the English Schools’ Championships on March 17.

Athletes were selected after the County Schools’ Championships at Meadowfield last month.

Teams of 16 have gone forward for the match with Cumbria, Cleveland and Northumberland.

Following this event, six teams of eight for the junior, intermediate and senior races for boys and girls will be selected for Ilton in Somerset.

There are also races for Year 7 pupils at Kirby Stephen, but they do not go forward for the English Schools’ Championships.

The local athletes that have gained selection for the Inter County match are:

Senior Boys: Wearside: Oliver James and Patrick Crombie. West Wearside: D. Harris. Gateshead: Barry Maskell.

Senior Girls: Easington Chloe Price. Gateshead: Alison Seadon.

Intermediate Boys: Wearside: Michael Wilson. West Wearside; Chris Peverley. Easington: Joel Jones.

Intermediate Girls: Wearside: Anna Robinson, Alex Pearson, Merial Smithson. West Wearside: Anna Fawcett, Amy Coulson

Junior Boys: West Wearside: Alex Brown, A Markham. Easington: Kerron Walker, Aaron Wood.

Junior Girls: Wearside: Sophie Burnett, Danielle Elliott. West Wearside: J Haswell.

Year 7 Boys: Wearside: Cameron Vincent. West Wearside: A Whellans.

Year 7 Girls: Wearside: Laura Hand. West Wearside: Olivia Nelson, R. Wells-Edward. Easington: Courtney Price.

Following the Northern Cross Country Championships at Pontefract last Saturday, four Sunderland Harriers have been selected for the North East team for the Inter Counties Championships at Birmingham on Saturday, March 10.

They are Junior Men – Oliver James. Under-15 Boys – Joel Jones. Junior Women – Alison Seadon. Under-17 Women – Amy Coulson.

Houghton Harrier Alex Brown has been selected the Under-13 Boys team.

H Following his superb third place in the Northern Cross Country Championships senior men’s race at Pontefract last Saturday, Patrick Martin receives his first England vest in the Lotto Cross Challenge at Hulshout in Belgium on Sunday 12th February.

This weekend the former Sunderland Harrier competes for Stockport in Spain in the international invitational club’s cross country relays.

H Sunderland Harrier David Savage was first North East finisher and sixth nationally in the Run Britain Reward Running grand prix. The competition is based on achieving thirteen different measures of progress within running – ranging from training mileage, frequency of racing, joining a group or club, lowering your handicap score, raising £111 or more for charity etc.

Sunderland Strollers have Paul West 41st, Harry Harrison 42nd, Alyson West 72nd and Tony Allen 103rd.

H The leaders in the Sunderland Harriers’ Cross Country Grand Prix at the halfway stage of the season are:

1. Alan Hodgson 39, 2. Fred Judson 36, Paul Redman 36, 4. Dean Phillips 35, 5. David Savage 31, 6. Paul Merrison 24, 7. Kevin Calvert 22, Michelle Holt 22, Oliver James 22, 10 Billy Bittlestone 21.

The final race in the competition is at Tynedale Harriers’ Prudhoe Harrier League on March 24. Awards will be made to the first five finishers.
