Michael Wilson was pipped for first place in the Northern Under-20 men’s 800m final at Sport City, Manchester, yesterday.

After winning his heat in 1.55.6, the Sunderland Harrier entered the final in confident mood.

But a dawdling first lap by the fastest runner in the field, City of Sheffield’s Joe Lancaster (1.50.43), saw Wilson’s race plans being thrown into chaos.

He found himself boxed in as he took the bell.

The North East champion said: “I lost a few friends as I charged through the field and entered the back straight with a healthy lead. But I realized, in the last 100m that I had gone off too fast too early.”

Despite him battling right to the line, Jacob Brown of Vale Royal, snatched victory from his grasp in 1.55.

Former Sunderland Harrier Jack Martin (Stockport) won his first Northern senior championship gold medal with his victory in the 5,000m.

He beat clubmate Jack Morris into second spot by just over one second to win in 14.30.10.

Sunderland Strollers hosted the Sunderland parkrun at Silksworth on Saturday.

As well as supplying the volunteers, they also offered some pacing-making duties to runners down the field.

The suggested times ranged from 22.30 to 32.30.

One Sunderland Harriers’ family made use of the extra incentives to all record personal bests in the 5k run.

Albert James, an over-45 and a former junior 800m international, clocked 22.21, son Rowan, 14, was timed at 23.09 and Debra, new to running, also over-45, stopped the clock on 25.05.

Husband and wife Albert and Debra are both intending to make their half marathon debuts at Amsterdam in September.

The first three places were filled by Sunderland Harriers with Liam Roarty first in 17.25, Ben Craig second (17.37) and veteran Alan Knebel third (18.18)

The first two finishers in the Durham Schools Track and Field Championship at Monkton, Jarrow, on Saturday, gained selection for the County team for the Inter Counties Schools Championships at Gateshead on Saturday.

After that, the Durham team will be selected to compete in the English Schools’ Championships at Gateshead on Friday/Saturday July 10/11.
