Strollers achieve a bit of history

SUNDERLAND STROLLERS achieved their best ever result, since they were formed over 25 years ago, in an open road race, when they filled first and second positions in the Prudhoe Five Miles Run yesterday.

Steve Rankin (30.25), pictured, and Tim Allsop (30.38) were the athletes to make history for the Ashbrooke club, heading a field of 120 runners.

In third place was Jesmond Jogger Michael Hedley (30.39) and Sunderland Harrier Peter Richardson finished 20th (36.25) and first over-60.

The women’s race was won by Sunderland Harrier Michelle Holt (33.48), beating Tynedale veteran Sonia Morley into second place (34.28).

H Jack Martin, on a visit to Sunderland, used the Silksworth parkrun to test his fitness after injury. The Stockport Harrier won in 15.56 from his former Sunderland Harriers’ clubmate Tim Field (17.21).

The inaugural Chester-le-Street parkrun at The Riverside was won by Wallsend Harrier Yared Hagos in 14.43.

South Hylton’s Sophie Burnett, an under-15, won the women’s race in 20.11.
