Sad news as Frazer dies

LEADING North East athletics official, Matt Frazer, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 82.

Among his many roles over his time in the sport, was as the Hon Secretary of the British Athletics Federation (now UKA Athletics), President of Northern Athletics AA and North East Counties Hon Secretary.

His first love was cross country and he became Hon Secretary of the English Cross Country Union and the first Hon Secretary and a former President of the English Cross Country Association. Matt started out with Gateshead Harriers before moving to Darlington and becoming club secretary.

He started his working life as a painter and decorator before going to university and then becoming head of youth and community for Durham County Council.

The funeral service will be on Friday at St Augustine’s Church, Darlington at 10am. The service will be followed by a private, family committal.
