Hudspith wins Sunderland 10k

MORPETH Harriers’ Ian Hudspith and Ross Floyd filled the first two places in the Sunderland City 10k.

Hudspith, a 43-year-old veteran, clocked 31.39 for an easy win, with Floyd on 33.29.

Hudspith, who led all the way, said: “I’m happy with that, as it is quite a tough course. It is a better run than I had in the North Tyneside 10k, a couple of weeks ago.

“It’s worth a lot better than that on a faster course.’’

In third place was Sunderland Harrier Craig Isherwood, who said: “I thought the course seemed about 200 yards too long and other runners said the same.

“We all got the same readings on our Garmins.

“I was running on my own after two miles, just behind Ross. Last year, I would never have got near him.”

Sunderland Stroller Steve Rankin was fourth, with Isherwood’s clubmate Michael Barker having a good race in fifth.

Sunderland Harrier Paul Collins was first over-50 in 12th and Peter Richardson was second over-60 in 38th (41.17).

First woman was Wallsend’s Danielle Hodgkinson in eighth (36.19) with Ponteland’s Joanne Brown a long way behind in 44th (41.27).

SUNDERLAND Harriers’ veterans scooped gold and silver medals in the North East Veterans Road Relay Championships at Hebburn.

The over-55 team took a blow when top man Brian Rushworth withdrew through injury.

But his replacement, Tony Thompso,n did not let the team down, running 12.43 on the second leg.

Paul Merrison clocked the fastest overall time of 10.40 and anchorman Peter Richardson recorded 12.05.

The Harriers’ over-60s were second, with Jim Wightman 13.25, Len Christopher 14.32 and Eddie Maddison 13.54. The over-45 team finished fourth, courtesy of George Harden 12.22, Paul Redman 11.09 and Tim Field 10.37.

BRITISH marathon over-60 record holder Ian Bloomfield (Chester-le-Street) finished 42nd in 18.22 with the second best age graded performance in the New Marske Harriers Redcar 5k Road Race.

New Gateshead recruit Matty Hynes won in 14.44 from the host club’s Andy Wiles (15.10). Sunderland Harrier Kevin Calvert was sixth (15.50).
