Sunderland Harriers Eve Quinn (9min 36sec) and Sarah Knight (9.37) were first and second in the under-15 girls’ race in the Elswick Harriers’ Good Friday Road Relays at Newburn.
Houghton Harrier Lily Hardie was third (9.39) and her twin Eva was sixth (10.00).
Houghton’s Henry Johnson (8.25) shattered the course record (8.40) with his clear victory in the under-13 boys’ race. Clubmate Will Bellamy was fifth (8.59). Houghton also placed Lydia James in fourth, Nicole Phillips sixth and Anna Pigford eighth in the under-13 girls’ race.
Sunderland Harriers senior men placed eighth in the main event won by Gateshead by just three seconds from Morpeth at Newburn.
Sunderland had Mark Hood in 15th on the first leg (11.23) then came Jack Tallentire (11.55), Sean Mackie (11.57) and Steve McMahon (10.58) to gradually edge up the field.
Houghton Harriers were 18th through Alex Brown (11.00), Adam Middleton (13.22), Ryan Clark (12.18) and Lee Dover (12.02).
Gateshead’s Chris Parr was the fastest overall in 10.07.
Sunderland’s Sophie Burnett (12.20) brought Birtley to victory in the women’s relay after Morpeth’s Olympian Laura Weightman, with a record-breaking leg (11.08), established a 72-second lead on the opening stage over Birtley’s Chloe Price. Tracy Millmore was the other Birtley runner (12.22).
Sunderland Harriers were up to eighth on the second leg through Jess Fox (13.26) and Alice Smith (13.32), but faded to a final 17th.
Elswick won the veterans women’s race, with Justina Heslop the quickest overall (12.15). Sunderland Harriers finished ninth, with Judith Thirwell (13.58), Vikki Cotton (14.55) and Emma North (15.05).
Sunderland Strollers were 11th and had Lynn Valentine (14.36), Dawn Elliott (15.01) and Lesley Watson (16.20) as their team.
