Elite get their running shoes on for City race

A FIELD of elite athletes, including Great Britain squad members and major championship medallists are set to wow the crowds in two exciting mile races ahead of the redspottedhanky.com Sunderland City 10k.

The men’s line-up includes Antony Whiteman, a former Commonwealth 1500m bronze medallist and World Student Games champion. He sits fifth on the all-time fastest list of Great Britain’s 1500m runners.

James Thie, a GB team member since 1998 and a Welsh record holder in the Indoor 1500m event is set to take part and has previously run in European and World Indoor Championships finals.

Gateshead Harrier Chris Parr will provide stiff competition for the GB runners along with up and coming Darlington athlete Lewis Moses

In the women’s mile, Becky Lynne, GB athlete and a former European bronze 800m medallist will be out for a fast time. She will be battling it out with a number of international competitors including GB athlete and World Cross Country competitor Faye Fullerton.

Race founder Steve Cram, pictured, said: “The Sunderland City 10k forms just part of what will be an exciting day of events and activities for people to enjoy.

“In the morning after the junior mile races and Sunderland Echo Junior Run have taken place the redspottedhanky.com elite women’s and men’s miles will get under way, providing great entertainment for the thousands of runners and spectators gathering for the start of the main event at 10.30am.

“In the elite races there are some really talented international athletes on display and I know that they’ll be aiming to run fast times.’’

Councillor Paul Watson, leader of Sunderland City Council, which is supporting the event, said: “The inaugural Sunderland City 10k is a fantastic event for the city and it’s highly encouraging to see that so many people, from elite athletes to fun runners and complete beginners, have signed up for what will be a thoroughly enjoyable event.”

Timetable: 9am Girls’ School mile race, 9.15 Boys’ School mile race, 9.30 Sunderland Echo Junior Run, 10.00 Elite women’s mile, 10.10 Elite men’s mile, 10.20 Armed Services Day Motorbike Cavalcade, 10.30 Sunderland City 10k (starting and finishing at the Stadium of Light).
