DURHAM had one of their best English Schools’ championships for years when they won five medals, including two golds.

But there was bad luck for Sunderland’s Michael Wilson, who was tipped to win a medal in the senior 800m in what was to be his final English Schools’ championship. Wilson did not make the journey to Birmingham after going down with a chest infection.

Red-hot favourite Markhim Lonsdale had no trouble in winning the inters’ 1500m crown, taking the title in 3min 55.93sec. Charlie Myers added Durham’s other gold with victory in the senior pole vault (5.00m).

The other medallists were Emily Gargan, who was runner-up in the inters’ triple jump (11.73m), National cross country champion Lydia Turner, who was third in the senior 1500m (4.23.58), and Adam Graham, who secured a bronze in the senior shot (15.34m).

Northumberland’s Max Pearson won the junior boys’ 1500m (4.06.50).
