Dixon seals two track personal bests in one race

INTERNATIONAL marathon runner Alyson Dixon switched from the roads to the track and was rewarded with two personal bests at Manchester on Saturday night.

The Sunderland Stroller competed at Sport City in the British Milers’ Club Grand Prix in the 5000m and came away with two PBs from the one race.

She finished ninth, chopping 22 seconds off her previous best in recording 16.00.10. On the way to that performance she recorded 9.30.42 at 3000m to slice five seconds off her previous fastest for the distance.

The race was won by Aldershot youngster Emelia Gorecka in 15.35.82 with Shildon’s Kate Avery fifth in 15.49.41.

Sunderland University’s Philip Hurst sliced over a second off his previous quickest time to win the 1500m A race in 3.41.10.

Sunderland Harrier Oliver James, the North East junior 1500m champion, won the 800m H race in a time just outside his best (1.54.92). Clubmate Michael Wilson, the North East junior 800m champion, finished eighth and last in the F race (1.58.20). He struggled after going off too fast, passing the bell behind the pacemaker in a swift 53.07. Nathan Reed was fourth in the F 1500m, recording a PB of 3.58.88.

Following their early season marks over the two laps, Wilson and James have moved into the Harriers’ top ten for 800m. Wilson (1.53.58) comes in at number five and James is ranked seventh (1.54.25)

Durham’s Dan Garbutt was fifth in the B 1500m (3.46.19). Whitburn’s Andrew Stanton finished seventh in the F race (3.52.27).

Morpeth’s Johnny Taylor won the 5000m (13.55.80) and North Yorks Moors Matt Hynes was fourth (14.02.89). Former Sunderland Harrier Patrick Martin finished 16th (14.21.19) and his brother Jack was fourth in the B race (14.29.29).

H Sunderland Strollers were among the prizes in the George Ogle Memorial multi terrain race at Swalwell. Ashleigh Thorpe was runner-up in the women’s race and Lyne Valentine was third. The mixed team prize went to the Strollers with Ashleigh Thorpe 37th, Steve McMahon fifth and Ken Maynard eighth, the scorers.

H New Marske’s Dominic Shaw got the verdict in yesterday’s Middlesbrough 5k Road Race after recording the same time as Morpeth’s Nick Swinburn (14.43).

Sunderland Harrier Mark Hood was fifth (14.58) and Ian Dixon clocked a PB of 16.48 in 27th.

Houghton Harriers had Daniel Hopper 85th in 19.03 and Katie Scott was seventh woman in 92nd (19.17).

H The North East Veterans League is staged at Monkton tonight (7.00). In the previous league meeting, Sunderland Harrier Peter Richardson beat the over-60 club 3000m record with his mark of 10.57.7
