Dixon puts in a solid display to hold off Smith

SUNDERLAND’S Alyson Dixon finished just outside her best time after winning a ding-dong battle with Durham City Harrier Rosie Smith in yesterday’s Tees Pride 10k Road Race, writes Kevin Carr.

The Chester-le-Street athlete finished a superb 12th overall in a field of 2000 to clock 33.34, which was just eight seconds outside her previous best.

Smith was just seven seconds behind in a massive personal best of 33.41, as both runners were well clear of third placed woman Josephine Stone of Middlesbrough/Mandale who clocked 35.17.

Matthew Hymes of North Yorks Moor again got the better, for the second time, of Wallsend’s Ethiopian star Yared Hagos to win the race in 30.13. Hagos recorded 30.20 for second and Morpeth’s Peter Newton was third (30.26). Sunderland Harrier Steve Graham was 31st (36.40).

Durham City Harrier Rob Hand was first over-50 in 18th (35.19), Chester-le-Street’s Ian Bloomfield won the over-55 title in 35th (36.45) and Sunderland Harrier Peter Richardson was first over-60 in 180th (42.07).

H Morpeth’s Ian Harding won (52.24) the Tynedale Jelly Tea 10- mile Road Race yesterday from Durham City Harrier Michael Crawley (52.57). The women’s race was won By Helen Waugh in 64.14.

Sunderland Strollers placed Tim Alsop in 21st (59.49), Steve Rankin 35th (62.19) and Kevin Blyth 39th (62.56), Alyson West recorded 74.14 and Lyne Valentine clocked 76.05.

Sunderland Harrier Paul Redman was 29th in 60.58.

H Morpeth’s Olympian Nick McCormick was beaten into second place (30.14) by Liverpool’s Johnny Mellor (29.24) in yesterday’s Great Yorkshire 10k in Sheffield.

H Sunderland Harriers and Sunderland Strollers made their presence felt in the Low Fell Watergate 5k Trail race at Lobley Hill, Gateshead on Thursday.

The Strollers’ Steve Rankin led the way in third (16.57) behind race winner Michael Morris (Morpeth) in 16.15 and Wallsend’s runner-up Chris Smith (16.26).

Sunderland Harriers who finished second (30pts) to Morpeth (23), had Paul Merrison as first over-50 in eighth (17.31), Steve Graham tenth (17.38) and Alan Hodgson first over-40 in 12th (17.56). Peter Richardson in 29th (19.38) was first over-60 and John Watson was second over-55 in 35th (20.11).

The Strollers finished third team (33) and backing Rankin were Steve McMahon 14th (18.01) and Tim Alsop second over-40 in 16th (18.08). Kevin Blyth finished 17th (18.11) and third over-50.

Sunderland Strollers finished third women’s team with Rachel Ball 56th (21.59), Nicola Todd 77th (23.47) and Audrey Duncan 90th (25.40). Tynedale’s Joanne Lee won the race in 19.16.
