Dixon is second woman in North 10k

SUNDERLAND Stroller Alyson Dixon continued her outstanding form with another first class performance in the Great North Gateshead 10k road race yesterday.

The international marathon runner finished second woman in a superb ninth overall (33.43), one place behind Charnwood’s Gemma Steel who defended her title in 33.26.

Third place was taken by Amy Whitehead of Notts AC, who recorded 34.57.

The race winner was former Elswick Harrier Ryan McLeod (Tipton) who won (30.28) by four seconds from Wallsend’s Yared Hagos. Third was Kent’s Paul Pollock (30.37).

Sunderland Harrier Weynay Ghebresilasie, under hospital care with a blood disorder, surprised his clubmates by turning out and finishing fourth in 30.56.

Runners finished in Gateshead International Stadium and enjoyed the applause of the crowd in the east stand, just before the British team took to the track in the European team competition.

Ian Dixon was the next Harrier to finish in 24th (36.32), John Watson clocked 41.55, Anthony Boyes (44.18), Shaun Bagley (44.34), David Bruce (45.28). Alex Higgins was the club’s first woman (48.25), followed by Rachael Moore (49.18), Kathryn Watt (49.53) and Susan Clughen was one of the first over-55s in 55.25.

Sunderland Strollers had Paul Roper 88th (37.50), Noel Little (41.23), Kevin O’Neil 47.08, John Tinn 47.38 and Alyson West 46.27.

Houghton Harriers placed Daniel Hopper 81st (40.11) and Kate Scott 190th (42.40).b
