Birtley Athletics Club took well-earned bronze medals behind winners Lincoln Wellington in the Northern Athletics Cross Country Relay Championships at Sheffield on Saturday.
The team was led off by Kate Waugh (11min 54sec in fourth place), followed by Tracy Millmore (12.21 – third) and Sunderland’s Sophie Burnett held onto a medal position on the anchor leg (11.59).
Waugh was the fourth fastest overall and Burnett the ninth.
Houghton Harriers were the first North East team to finish at Graves Park in the senior men’s race in 26th.
The team featured Alex Brown (10.41), Lee Dover (11.36), Rory Graham (12.07) and Steven Johnson (12.37). Lincoln Wellington won for a golden double.
The Houghton under-15 girls’ team were seventh, with Lydia James (8.05), Lily Hardie (8.46) and Eva Hardie (8.29).
The under-15 boys’ were also seventh, thanks to Henry Johnson (6.59), Will Bellamy (7.24) and Matthew Cleugh (7.42).
Gateshead Harrier Chris Parr dipped under the 15-minute barrier with his easy win (14.50) in the Temple Park 5k on Saturday.
Under-20 Markhim Lonsdale (Crook) was second in 15.28.
The first woman was Josephine Stone (Middlesbrough) in 13th (17.09).
Sunderland Harrier Sparrow Morley finished seventh (16.31) and Aidan Crowe was 22nd (17.39). Sunderland Strollers Mark Anderson claimed 17th (17.17) and Chris Dwyer finished 27th (18.03).
Sunderland Harrier Steven Duffy clocked 59.07 in yesterday’s Great South Run 10-mile road race.
