SUNDERLAND STROLLER Alyson Dixon wasted no time in getting back into competitive action after celebrating her call-up for the Commonwealth Games marathon in Glasgow next month.
She surprised many by turning out in Elswick Harriers’ Newburn River Run on Wednesday, just three days before competing in the Olomouc half-marathon in Czech Republic on Saturday evening.
At Newburn, she finished first woman in 14th overall (38min 13sec), well outside her course record set last year (36.02).
Then, competing in the charming Baroque city in the heart of Moravia, she faced an international field, including Kenyans and Ethiopians, and finished sixth in 1hr 13min 12sec. The race was won by Kenyan Edna Kiplagat (1.09.23).
Dixon said: “It was a tough course with lots of cobbles. It was a solid run’.’
At Newburn, Durham City Harrier Dan Jenkin won in 35.10, with Sunderland Harrier Damien Weston having a good run in sixth (37.17).
