ALICE Curtis is the ladies singles champion for a third successive year – with another narrow win against Ella Baker.
The pair also met in the previous two finals, with Curtis edging both 21-20.
And this time, just like last year, it was Curtis who came from behind to snatch a 21-19 win.
The men’s senior singles saw Tommy Jopling beat Joe Flett 21-14 to seal a fourth straight success and remain on course to match the late great Danny Bell’s feat of six straight wins.
It was a revenge win for Jopling after losing the two-bowl final to Flett the day before. It was a high quality final that lasted 31 ends, with Flett coming out on top 21-19 win to prevent Jopling from retaining his title.
In the men’s triples final Keith Hopper, Hendy Shields and Stevie Angus secured a first title by defeating the 2009 winners Les Hughes, Billy Hearne and Dennis Hulley 20-8.
The key moments came on the second end as Angus collected a six to lead 8-0 and the ninth end when Angus collected a five to lead 15-7.
In the ladies pairs, Alice Curtis and Ella Baker faced Renee Mallaburn and Sheila Davis, and proved too strong as they eased to a 17-2 win to record their third success in the last five years.
In the senior pairs final, John Smith and Fred Knubley faced Hendy Shields (sub) and Billy Roberts. The key moments came on the seventh and 11th ends as the Smith and Knubley collected two fours to run out 15-5 winners.
H This weekend will see the Golden Charter Australian Pairs take place at Crowtree.
The £400-sponsored tournament will feature 20 pairs battling it out over the two sessions. The action starts at 12.30pm on both days, ending at 5.30.
On Tuesday, the Sunderland senior A team return to action as they head to Aycliffe for the play off quarter-final. After the final game 5-0 defeat at Houghton, the Crowtree outfit dropped down to group runners-up therefore losing home advantage in the quarter-finals.
The selectors have named the following team: H.Shields, A.Baker, R.Robinson, R.Graham, P.Collins, R.Robson, F.Knubley, W.Ferry, R.Jobling, W.Hearne, J.Jones, T.Jopling. The game starts at 10.30am.
H The Durham County selectors have named an unchanged Liberty Trophy team for the national final against Somerset at Nottingham.
Locally, Sunderland’s Phillip Dixon and Gary Farquhar are on the bench. The final takes place a week on Sunday at 3pm. The county is putting on a couple of coaches one of which will leave Park Lane at 9am. Seats are available at £10 and anyone wishing to book a seat please contact county secretary Dave Morgan.
H The region lost a familiar face with the news that Durham’s Brian Robson sadly passed away. Well known for his enthusiasm on the green, Robson was a much-respected player and will be sadly missed.

H Houghton Town bowls club is holding an open day on Saturday, April 21.

H Last season, the Barley Mow club suffered from an arson attack on their clubhouse. With the outdoor season just weeks away, finally work has started on repairing the clubhouse.
With doubts over the club’s future, there are plans to hold a meeting to confirm membership numbers. However, anyone interested in joining the club can do so by contacting George Gibson.
H The England outdoor selectors have announced the England trial team for this year’s home international series. Following his national single success, Silksworth’s David Bolt is included at third bowl to Berkshire’s Robert Newman while Darlington RA’s Andrew Kirtland is handed a skipping role.
The trial is at Norgen in Warwick on Sunday, May 27. There are no Durham representatives in the men’s Under 25 trial team or both the ladies main and Under 25 teams.
