It is perhaps no surprise to the rest of football that tomorrow's game pairs two newly-promoted sides who are already relegation candidates.
But the scale of the investment in fresh blood on Wearside has been such that a place in the bottom three is not what I expected at this stage of the season and perhaps not what most Black Cats fans expected.

It was the biggest spending spree in the club's history, and yet Sunderland go into tomorrow's clash only slightly better off than opponents Derby, who prop up the league.

Only four points separate the clubs – ironically the same margin that meant Sunderland were Championship winners ahead of the third-placed Rams last term.

The difficult start Sunderland have had illustrates a couple of things for me.

The first and most glaring is that the gulf between Championship and Premier League class grows wider by the season, telling us how vital it is to hang in there.

The second is that, while they got a lot of talented Championship players in the summer, many of them have yet to prove they are Premier League players.

Their price tags were high and that may have had a lot to do with the fact that the rest of football knew that Sunderland had investors willing to spend big to pursue their dreams and all of Wearside's dreams.

It's expected that the money men thought a £37m outlay would pay for slightly more than third from bottom with 14 games gone.

Tomorrow is now a big game – a must-win in terms of retaining fans' belief as much as anything else.

The club has enjoyed plenty of goodwill from the supporters this season, despite a bad start in terms of results, but anxiety can easily creep in and that could damage Sunderland's survival chances.

Forget Paul Jewell, the new Derby boss, and the reaction he might get from the Rams.

Tomorrow is all about Sunderland and how they react against a side that has been so poor this season, they haven't even scored an away goal in the Premier League.

Prediction: Home win.

I would love to say they are going to win but the way they are playing at the moment - who knows!! Maybe Keanes words the other day on the training ground might work some magic up!

I think the game against Derby on Saturday is a relegation six pointer, whatever others may say. Yes we may have spent 37+ million over the summer but some of the players have been suspect in my eyes. Chopra, Etuhu, Halford are good footballers but the Premiership may be a level two high for them. Miller should be given a few games, he is quality and should be starting most games. Come January we should be going out for a proven striker, quality right back ( Whitehead should not be playing there, although when he does he lets no one down but he should be in his midfield position ), a centre half and left back to to put pressure on collins and Co. Unless we start picking up points we will struggle big time, there is enough quality in the squad though but only just, I fear if we don't get at least 10 points from now and over the christmas/new year period we will be in the dog fight come may 2008. Verdict S'land 3-0 Derby

I do not wish to be a pessimist but there have been too many games this season where the opposition have come to the Stadium of Light to register their first goal or goals. I would like to think the game tomorrow will be a different story but I am not convinced. I predict 3-1 to the Lads. Fingers crossed!

We should stuff derby about 4-1. The lads always play pretty well! And we can score , just 30% more shots on target ratio and I reckon we'll be okay

We should beat Derby 4-1. Last week was bad but we do play as well as anyone else mostly. just add 30% to the shots on target ratio and we should be okay. I'm used to Sunderland been written off each time we get in the Premiership, but not this time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
