Sunderland this afternoon denied that Andy Cole had passed a medical with the club.
The Echo reported that a deal for the former Manchester United and Newcastle striker was at an advanced stage and he was expected to sign in the next day or two.

But a Black Cats' spokesman insisted Cole "has not passed a medical and is not in the process of having one".

Cole watched from the stands as Sunderland lost 3-0 at Wigan on Saturday. Boss Roy Keane said afterwards that his former Old Trafford colleague was there "as a fan".
