Sunderland fans give their verdict on yesterday's final-day loss to Arsenal
Liz Hugill

I enjoyed yesterday's game. It had a typical end-of-season feel, but it was nice to be able to celebrate our survival.

As much as Roy says he isn't pleased because we've still lost too many games, I think he has achieved a great deal. He has managed to stabilise us and that was essential in order for us to move onwards and upwards.

Arsenal were class even though they weren't playing at full pace. Theo Walcott is a brilliant player with great pace and will be one for the future. I thought Carlos had a good game too. If he can stay injury-free in pre-season, I'd tip him to do very well next year.

I'd like to see Roy make Jonny Evans his first signing of the summer.

He is a great player and is an integral part of our back four.

We need some new players, that's a fact – we've been badly exposed in most areas and our squad does not contain nearly enough quality. But I have faith in Roy and Niall and think they can bring the right people in.

So that's it for the jury and no games to comment on. Instead it's a summer waiting for any snippets of transfer gossip ... bring it on!

Tony Potts

It is so, so disappointing to sign off with a defeat.

There was much more about the performance compared to the Bolton game and we were undone by one piece of quality and the searing pace of Walcott. You always felt, however, that Arsenal were largely in control of the game.

I was somewhat disappointed with the formation and the fact that we didn't put them under any real pressure, although we almost snatched a draw at the death. In some ways, it ended in a whimper.

So that's it for another year. It can be seen as a season of progress and we have achieved the main objective of staying up.

There are likely to be significant changes in the summer and the absence of Richardson and Murphy from the 16 yesterday and Stokes' omission from the squad over recent weeks may be an indication of the manager's thinking. We will have to wait and see.

Mark Fawcett

I know the game was against an Arsenal reserve side, but a draw would have been fair. We created a number of chances and with either a bit of luck or skill an equaliser would have come.

My man of the match was Wallace. After coming back from a long-term injury, the performance was nothing less than outstanding. His pace, control and constant threat down both flanks caused Champions League experienced defenders problems all day.

I have special praise for Reid and Fulop. Reid kept control of a midfield that at times looked like being overrun and was able to spin out of tackles like Kate Middleton on a pole in a strip club.

Fulop came in and did very well with a good number of stops. I feel Gordon would have stopped Walcott's effort but probably not one of the other chances they created.

Dwight Yorke has been an excellent player for the club. The experience he has brought in has been invaluable and I think if he was persuaded to stay on in a coaching role, especially for the youths, could only be a good thing.

The building for next season begins now. The aim surely is quality, not quantity. With Reading and Birmingham both going down, there are a couple of players who would add to the squad. But I expect Keane to cast his net further afield. This season is the best for seven years; next year has to improve on this.

Phil Parker

That wasn't too bad a display to sign off with, was it?

A huge crowd saw some good football from both teams, although some of the names on the Arsenal team sheet were not names we'd normally recognise. Walcott's pace onto a lovely through ball and his assured finish was the difference between the teams – he could finish.

Roy O'Donovan, on the other hand, missed some very good chances. It's his youth and – I assume – comparatively low wages, which might see him get another chance, but I wouldn't be too sure.

Having said that, a few of our players will have done themselves no harm in Roy's eyes – no-one more so than Ross Wallace, who had a good game. Some of his close control and crossing was excellen. Maybe he'll get himself off the transfer list.

The game again showed us all that Roy (the boss) needs to sort out a right-back, and if reports about Simpson from Manchester United are true, he could do a lot worse than bringing him back to the club.

It's been an exciting ride, two of our fellow promoted clubs failed to hang on, just showing how tough it is to bridge the gap.

Well done Roy, Niall the team and us, the supporters.

With what's been learned, let's hope we can be in even better shape to take on a new fixture list – and who knows, maybe even Hull City!

August is just around the corner …

Gary Hollern

After a narrow defeat to a quality team, now the real hard work starts for Keane.

We need to clear out the deadwood and bring in quality for next season.
I have enjoyed my stint on the panel, and l am pleased we had a season which allowed us to stay in the Premiership.

Goodbye. It's only 10 weeks to go to the new season!
