Nyron Nosworthy admits that his Sunderland return was a nightmare, with Wigan sending the Black Cats crashing out of the FA Cup on Saturday.
The big defender out since November with a knee injury, was recalled for the third round tie without the benefit of even a reserve outing.

Though the magic of the cup is part of footballing folklore, there was no sign of it at the Stadium of Light.

And Nosworthy, surprisingly given a right-back role rather than the expected central defensive reunion with loan signing Jonny Evans, confessed to have been devastated by the dismal defeat.

He said: "It's a sorry state when you come out here an say and FA Cup game was like a testimonial.

"I personally don't view it like that – I view it as a stepping stone towards Wembley and you never know what will happen.

"But it just didn't happen. You do feel ashamed.

"It was a poor performance and it hurts.

"Some players might look as if they're not feeling it, but we are and we have to get on with things. It was at home and we lost a game because it was as if it was a game for the reserves – well, that's how it felt and that's how the tempo was and it wasn't good to watch.

"Making excuses is something the manager doesn't want to do, and that's like all the players. We are professionals, you want to stick your chests out and take responsibility.

"The next time we go out there, we have to perform. We can't lead heads drop."

Nosworthy is relishing the arrival of more players this month to follow the loan signing of Evans.

"It's a good thing that the gaffer is looking to bring in new quality," added Nosworthy.

"Everyone will be looking at themselves and looking to raise their game. It's a natural thing.

"Nobody wants to be left by the wayside. So it can only be a good thing that he's trying to bring in quality and trying to put pressure on players already here."
