Durham City made a sluggish start but eventually overwhelmed Rossendale United 4-0 to maintain their unbeaten start in the UniBond League Division One North on Saturday.
It took Lee Collings' side more than 20 minutes to get into their stride at the Arnott Stadium. Adam Johnston and Gavin Cogdon tested the visitors' defence before City broke the deadlock after 26 minutes.

An excellent corner by Tommy English was m
issed by everyone except Calvin Smith, who slammed the ball into the net at the far post.

Johnston and Cogdon had chances to increase the lead and, surprisingly, it was not until the 59th minute that the second goal arrived.

Durham's wing men had troubled Rossendale's defence with some good crosses and when Stephen Harrison produced yet another centre, John Toft rose to head in, wide of keeper Ben Proctor.

It was all over nine minutes later as the impressive Cogdon combined with English before firing home.

In the last 20 minutes, it was all Durham, who passed up a number of goal-scoring opportunities before Cogdon completed an emphatic 4-0 victory – nothing less than City deserved.

City are fifth, eight points off top spot with five games in hand.

DURHAM CITY: Turns, Harrison, Capper (Duke), Dodds (Dixon), R Smith, Laws, Toft, C Smith, Cogden, Johnston (Bell), English.
