Sunderland have worked hard on set-piece routines - as they tried to learn the lessons of the recent 2-1 loss at Aston Villa.
And although Sunderland players had been warned before the Villa Park clash of the hosts' genuine threat at set-pieces, they were still undone from needlessly conceded and disappointingly defended free-kicks.
Manager Roy Keane told the Football Echo: "Free-kicks and corners have become so important in the modern game because, when you have players capable of making good use of the ball and putting in excellent deliveries, they are very hard to defend against.
"We spent some time in training this week looking at both sides of set-pieces.
"We've looked at ways of defending against them and we've also looked at ways of making more of them when they fall to us.
"I think those areas are areas we'll improve on."
