Chris, from The Royalty, Sunderland, scooped the top prize in the 28th season of the Echo competition – with his Hardcorefan team pipping his nearest challengers (Wendsboyz, managed by Wendy McDonald of Penshaw) by a point.

Reallife, managed by Andrew Tyzack of Vicarage Close, Sunderland, were third, a further point behind.

The cash is a timely lift for Chris, who said: "I've just been laid off from TRW, so this is great. I'm going away with the lads to Blackpool soon, and this will help a lot."

Chris's team banked on a defensive combination of Watford and Blackburn, with Roque Santa Cruz, Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, Andy Johnson, Dimitar Berbatov and Patrick Agyemang providing the goals.

Chris added: "Santa Cruz was a key man for me. He got two goals last week, and that was enough to clinch it. He's been good."

* More Dream Teams winners and all the final standings in Saturday's Football Echo.
