LITTLE and Large duo Adam Whitfield and Warren Baister are the toast of Wearside today.
Flyweight Whitfield and heavyweight Baister claimed national titles at the Amateur Boxing Association Senior Championships finals in London last night.
It's the first time that two ABA titles have come back to Wearside since brothers James and David Dolan were in their pomp in 2000.
Nineteen-year-old Whitfield, boxing for the Army, was too skilful for Stockbridge ABC's Anthony Smith.
A former Junior ABA champion from his days at Sunderland Amateur Boxing Club, the 19-year-old got ahead early and stayed in front all the way
Southpaw Smith tried to box on the counter attack, but couldn't find the target.
Sunderland ABC's Baister, formerly of the now defunct Marley Pots ABC, was out to bury the disappointment of his narrow loss in last year's ABA quarter-finals, when he lost by just one point by eventual champion Danny Price, of Scarborough.
Though perhaps more powerfully built, Harvey had no answer to the variety and speed of Baister's attacks.
Looking constantly for a knockout shot, he was picked off by Baister's slick combinations as the Wearsider built a 4-0 lead after the first round and 7-1 after the second.
But there was a scare midway through the third round when the referee halted the bout for a doctor to look at a small cut over Baister's left eye.
It could have spurred Harvey, but instead it lifted Baister to greater heights on the way to a resounding 17-3 win.
Full story in tonight's Sunderland Echo.
