Sunderland Harrier Gavin Massingham, a former Northern 800m champion, finished a creditable 17th in the classy Alsager five-mile road race yesterday.
Sunderland's fastest miler now heads off for three weeks warm weather training in South Africa in preparation for the track season.

Morpeth's Nick McCormick, the Commonwealth and European Championship runner, won the race in 23.33.

The women's winner was Stoke's Michelle Ross-Cope in 26.53. Chester-le-Street's Melissa Turner was fourth (28.11).

* Sunderland Harriers' George Harden (17.53) and Steven Duffy (18.09) were first and second in the Sunderland Parkrun at the Silksworth Sports Complex on Saturday. The women's winner was Sunderland Stroller Judith Shotton (25.06).
