Midfield and defence provide Steve Bruce with his biggest decisions this weekend against Arsenal.
Suspensions govern the manager's selections once again with captain Lorik Cana sure to return from his one-match ban but Michael Turner leaving the line-up after collecting his fifth booking.

Sunderland's midfield performed brilliantly at Spurs, but Cana has to be accommodated in what you would expect to be another five-man blanket.

Bruce must decide which man to sacrifice from the five who played at White Hart Lane – Steed Malbranque, Andy Reid, Kieran Richardson, Jordan Henderson and Fraizer Campbell. Malbranque, Reid and Richardson are Sunderland's most creative players, but with George McCartney back from Northern Ireland duty carrying a knock, Richardson may be needed at left-back, solving something of a headache for the boss.

Turner's absence is huge, and I'm not just referring to the 6ft 4in centre-back's sheer size. He has been the Black Cats' best defender and is hard to replace.

John Mensah has trained this week but lacks match sharpness. Bruce values the Ghana international's speed and strength, but it would appear a gamble to fetch him back against such quick and mobile opponents. Anton Ferdinand and Nyron Nosworthy are the others in the mix.

Arsenal have looked irresistible during a 13-match unbeaten run and regardless of injuries will field a side that Arsene Wenger believes is capable of claiming three points.

We have seen from the youthful sides they've fielded in the Carling Cup against Premier League opposition that their up-and-coming players can perform at the highest level.

And with the little magician Cesc Fabregas available, the Gunners will always create chances with their freedom of movement and ability on the ball.

I can't wait for the game.

I really believe that Sunderland can get something from it, particularly if they create chances like they did against West Ham and Spurs in the last two games.

It could be a proper thriller between counter-attacking sides. Great for the crowd, but probably not for Steve Bruce's blood pressure.

Prediction: Score draw.
