But now Wales coach Dean Saunders hopes Collins (right) can have a rethink.

After boss John Toshack named a 35-strong squad for friendlies in Iceland (May 28) and Holland (June 1), Saunders said of Collins: "The door is still open, we are just waiting for the call.

"He had his reasons for not being involved, he wanted to establish himself at Sunderland. Well, they have stayed up and he has done well.

"But I must admit that nothing stopped me playing for Wales and I cannot understand such problems or arguments. I find it very difficult to understand."
