Kevin Ball hailed goalscorers Martyn Waghorn and Jordan Henderson for firing Sunderland into the FA Youth Cup semi-finals, but insisted: "We won it as a team."
The young Black Cats ended Charlton's goal-laden run at The Valley last night to progress to the last four.

The Addicks had scored 11 goals over the previous two rounds, but found Sunderland under-18s a tougher nut to crack.

South Shields-born Waghorn put Sunderland ahead before Charlton levelled, but Henderson's cute lob won it in injury time.

Assistant academy manager Ball said: "It was a fantastic win and I'm really pleased for them. They've worked very hard and to come and get a win is a great result.

"Waggy's goal sparked us into life and then all of a sudden they got a goal back. The tempo was lifted and both teams contributed to a great game of football

"If you want a chance like that at the end to fall at anyone's feet, it's Jordan Henderson. It was a great goal.

"Our back-four – and our keeper – were great, the two lads scored great goals but we won it as a team."

The prize at stake made for a cagey opening, thought Ball.

"It was a tough game but we expected that – Charlton are a good side," he said.

"At the start of the game both sides showed each other too much respect. In the first 25 or 30 minutes, we never really played.

"We didn't start quickly enough. We coped with their system and gradually we imposed ourselves - we started to show we're a decent team.

"They had a couple of half-chances and we did as well – and then Jordan got a half-chance and won it for us."

As many as 500 Sunderland fans were at The Valley. "We were very fortunate to have the fans here," said Ball.

"To have so many for a Youth Cup game in London on a Wednesday night epitomises Sunderland fans."

The Black Cats now face Manchester City in a two-legged semi-final. City beat Plymouth 4-1 in their quarter-final on Tuesday.

Ball added: "Man City have got an outstanding academy; they provide the template.

"We've had some great games against them and I'm sure we'll have another."
