Sunderland man remanded after facing armed robbery charge

A man has made his first appearance before a court to answer a series of charges in connection with an armed robbery.

Aaron Redman, 30, of Mandela Close, in Sunderland's East End, appeared before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court today.

He was charged by Durham Constabulary in connection with an armed robbery at a bookmakers in Cheveley Park Shopping Centre, Durham, on Saturday night.

The incident happened at around 6pm.

Firearms officers arrested a suspect later that evening at an address in Durham.

The charges Redman related to robbery; possession of an imitation firearms with intent to cause fear of violence; use of an imitation firearm to resist arrest; false imprisonment; making threats to kill; common assault by beating, assault and two counts of criminal damage.

He was remanded in custody until August 1, when he will appear before Durham Crown Court.
