A serious accident has closed an A19 slip road in Sunderland.

A serious collision has closed the A19 off slip at Herrington Interchange.

The crash happened shortly before 8pm on the southbound exit slip at Herrington Interchange

Emergency services are at the scene and diversions in place between, via A183 into Sunderland and then onto the B4140.

A witness told the Echo: "Massive accident A19 southbound on the slip road too Doxford Park and the A690 involving at least one lorry and several cars.

"A lot of police and ambulance in attendance."
