“She draws a smile wherever she goes.”
That’s how the Sunderland Echo remembered Diana, Princess of Wales after she enchanted crowds on one of her visits to the city.
Her first trip to Wearside came back in 1985 when visited Houghton, Philadelphia, Sunderland Civic Centre and St Vincent Street in Hendon.
In September 1993 she came back to the city to spend time with patients at St Benedict’s Hospice.
There were also visits to Peterlee, to open the Fisher Price Toy Factory in 1983, and a visit to Durham’s Age Concern in 1987.
Today, as people mark the 20th anniversary of her death, we look back at Diana’s visits to our region.
