A man was seen on top of Wearmouth Bridge threatening to jump from the structure.

At about 7.30pm on Monday the man could be seen walking along the top of the bridge.

RNLI crews were scrambled in case he decided to jump into the River Wear below.

Thankfully however, he was talked down and taken into the care of police.

A spokesman for Sunderland RNLI said: "Volunteers launched to support emergency services who were dealing with a distressed male who was standing on the top of Wearmouth Bridge.

"After a short time the gentleman agreed to climb down from the bridge to safety when he was then taken into police custody.

"The lifeboat crew were then stood down from the incident by Humber Coastguard and cleared to return to station."
