A man suffered serious injuries after he was attacked from behind outside a Sunderland pub early this morning.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the assault which took place between 1am and 1.15am outside the Jolly Potter Pub in Railway Terrace, South Hylton.

A 37-year-old man was attacked from behind by a man.

He was struck over the head three times with what is believed to be a baton, causing serious injuries.

He was taken by ambulance to Sunderland Royal Hospital and later transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary where his condition is described as stable.

There are believed to have been a number of people on the street at the time of the assault. There was also a white people carrier taxi, and detectives are asking for the occupants of the vehicle to get in touch as they may have witnessed the attack.
