Walkers young and old put their best foot forward in the Active Sunderland Big WalK.
Around 400 people took part in the event at Herrington Country Park, which featured three routes, ranging from three miles to 11.5 miles.
The walk caps off this year’s series of Active Sunderland Big events, which has also featured a Big Mini Fun Run and Big Ride.
Fitness expert Katie Bulmer-Cooke and daughter Heidi, six, were on hand to warm up the walkers as they set off on the circular routes.
Katie, who shot to fame on The Apprentice, said: “I’ve taken part in all of the Big Walks for the past four years and they are great for the city. The main thing is that they’re not elitist so people who might not normally partake in fitness can feel more comfortable about joining in.
“The weather wasn’t great first thing in the morning but I find it never dampens the spirit of these things.”
Victoria French, event organiser, said: “Our three Big events, as well as our six Active Sunderland festivals which we run throughout the year are about giving people the opportunities to be active, as well as showcasing parts of Sunderland people might not normally see.
“It’s hoped that people take part in the Big events and then may be inspired to take part in one of our weekly walks which are held across the city.”
Victor Cadaxa, one of the volunteers at Friends of Herrington Country Park, said: “As well as being a fitness event, the Big Walk is a great way to discover the park.”
